Guide: level 5

Integrated systems testing: what happens on the day

Integrated systems testing proves that power, cooling, controls and life safety work together when something fails. It is the last chance to find a problem before the IT goes live.

Key points
  • It starts only when level 4 is complete for every system in scope.
  • Scenarios are scripted and witnessed, never improvised.
  • Every event is time stamped and the trend data is kept.
  • Faults are fixed and the scenario is run again.
Before the day

Ready means more than installed.

Integrated testing depends on everything that came before it. Each system has passed its functional tests, the scripts are approved and the load banks are in place.

The checklist
  • Level 4 complete for every system in scope
  • Scripts approved by the commissioning authority
  • Load banks or heat load emulators installed
  • Power quality analysers, temperature loggers and BMS trends set up
  • Roles, communication and a safe state agreed in advance
The scenarios

What is made to fail.

Each scenario is applied deliberately and the response of every connected system is observed.

Typical scenarios
  • Loss of the utility supply
  • Generator start, synchronisation and transfer
  • UPS on battery, transfer and retransfer
  • Loss of a cooling unit or pump, and recovery
  • Fire alarm cause and effect across all connected systems
On the day

Run, observe, restore, record.

The day starts with a briefing. Witnesses take their positions, each scenario is run to the script, the events are logged as they happen and the systems are restored to normal before the next scenario starts.

Pass or fail

What a pass looks like.

The acceptance criteria come from the design and are written into the script before the test.

Typical criteria
  • No loss of power to the critical load
  • Temperatures within the design limits throughout
  • Alarms raised and reported correctly
  • Every system returns to normal operation
Afterwards

What you receive.

You receive an integrated systems test report with the time stamped events, the trend data and an open issues list. Any fault found is fixed and that scenario is run again until it passes.
